Answers about playing games, controls, cloud saves, accounts, Supporter features, billing, and regional game versions.
Playing and Emulator Controls
How do I enable the game controls?
Click the game window once. This gives the emulator keyboard focus and enables its controls. Click outside the player when you want to release the controls and use the rest of the page normally.
Why did the keyboard controls stop responding?
The game window may have lost focus after you clicked elsewhere on the page, opened a menu, or switched browser tabs. Click the game window again. If that does not help, close any open emulator menu and check that your current bindings still appear in the Controls section below the player.
How do I change the keyboard controls?
Click the game window, open Control Settings from the emulator menu, and change the bindings there. The Controls section below the player updates to show the keys that are currently assigned.
Why are the controls shown below the game different from the original defaults?
The Controls section reflects the bindings currently loaded in the emulator. It changes when you edit a binding or load a saved controls profile, while the action descriptions remain specific to the game.
Can I use a gamepad?
Yes. Connect a controller recognized by your browser and use the emulator’s gamepad and control settings. Browser and operating-system support still determines whether a particular controller is detected correctly.
Can two people play on the same device?
Yes, when the game itself supports local multiplayer. Player controls can be assigned to different keyboard keys or compatible controllers. A game marked for multiple players may still require selecting its multiplayer mode inside the game.
What do Quick Save State and Quick Load State do?
They use the emulator’s own state slots in your current browser. Quick Save captures the current moment in the game, and Quick Load restores the selected slot. These local emulator states are separate from the account-based Cloud Save feature.
Can I import a save file through the emulator?
Yes. Use the emulator’s save-file or state import control. If the game does not update immediately after an in-game save file is imported, restart the game as the emulator message suggests. Importing a file into the emulator does not automatically upload it to your 1UPHeart account.
Cloud Saves
What’s the difference between emulator saves and cloud saves?
Emulator saves and Quick Save slots belong to the emulator in your current browser or device. They can be lost if that browser’s site data is cleared. A cloud save is a save state stored under your 1UPHeart account on the server, so you can load it from another compatible device after signing in.
Do I need an account to save progress to the cloud?
Yes. The game itself remains playable without an account, but Cloud Save and Cloud Load need a signed-in account so the save can be stored privately under the correct user.
Why does Cloud Save say that I must start the game first?
The emulator must be running before it can produce or accept a save state. Start the game and wait until it is playable, then use Save Progress or Load Progress.
How many cloud saves can a regular account keep?
A regular account can keep one cloud save in total. Saving progress for another game asks you to replace the existing save rather than silently deleting it.
How many cloud saves can a Supporter keep?
An active Supporter can keep one cloud save for every exact ROM version. This allows saves for multiple games and for distinct regional versions without using one global account slot.
Can I keep multiple cloud saves for the same game as a Supporter?
Not for the same exact ROM. Each exact ROM version has one cloud-save slot, so saving it again overwrites that ROM’s previous cloud save after confirmation. A genuinely different regional ROM is treated as a different version and receives its own slot.
Do translated pages that use the same ROM share one cloud save?
Yes. Cloud-save compatibility is based on the normalized ROM file and emulator core, not the language of the page. If several translated posts launch the same ROM, they use the same cloud save.
Do different regional versions of a game use separate cloud saves?
Yes. A USA, European, Japanese, or translated ROM with a different file is a separate game version. Supporters can keep one cloud save for each of those exact ROMs. Regular accounts still have the one-save account limit.
Why can’t I load a cloud save into another version of the same game?
Save states are tied to the exact ROM and emulator core that created them. Even closely related regional releases can have different data layouts. The site blocks an incompatible load instead of risking a crash or corrupted progress.
What happens when I overwrite a cloud save?
The existing server file for that slot is replaced by the current emulator state. The site shows an inline confirmation before doing this. Overwriting cannot be undone, so download the old save first if you want to keep a backup.
Where can I manage, download, or delete my cloud saves?
Open the Saves section of your account. Each save shows the game page, ROM filename, language, and saved date, with controls to return to the game, download the file, or delete it.
Can I continue a cloud save on another device?
Yes. Sign in to the same account, open a page that launches the same ROM version, start the emulator, and select Load Progress. A different ROM or emulator core will not accept the save.
Can I upload a downloaded file directly to Cloud Saves?
No. Files can be imported through the emulator for local use, but the website does not accept arbitrary file uploads into cloud storage. To create a cloud save, run the game, import or load the compatible state if needed, and then press Save Progress.
Can a deleted cloud save be restored?
No. Deleting a save removes both its account record and server file. Download a copy before deleting anything you may want later.
Controls Profiles
What is a controls profile?
A controls profile is a server-side copy of your current emulator bindings for one console. It lets you restore those bindings after changing device or browser instead of configuring every player again.
How do I save or load a controls profile?
Start a game for the console, configure its bindings in Control Settings, and use Save Controls below the player. Use Load Controls on any game using the same console profile to apply the saved bindings.
How many controls profiles can a regular account keep?
A regular account can keep one controls profile in total. Saving controls for another console requires replacing the existing profile after confirmation.
How many controls profiles can a Supporter keep?
An active Supporter can keep one profile for every console currently supported by the emulator plugin. Each console has its own profile because its buttons and default layout can differ.
Can I save multiple controls profiles for a single console?
No. Each console has one server-side controls profile per account, and saving it again overwrites the previous version after confirmation. If multiple profiles for one console would improve your setup, let us know in the comments.
Does a controls profile include every player?
Yes. The saved profile can include the current bindings for Players 1 through 4, including directional controls and supported console buttons.
Does one controls profile work across different games?
Yes, when those games use the same console profile. For example, a saved Game Boy Advance profile can be loaded on another Game Boy Advance game. It is not applied to NES, SNES, or Sega Genesis games because those consoles have separate profiles.
Will the Controls section update when I load or edit bindings?
Yes. The keycaps shown below the game update when the emulator reports a changed binding or when a controls profile is loaded. The localized action descriptions still come from the current game post.
Where can I delete a saved controls profile?
Open the Saves section of your account. Controls profiles appear below the game saves and can be deleted there.
What happens to my controls profiles if Supporter access ends?
Existing profiles are not automatically deleted. Your account returns to the regular one-profile limit, so creating a profile for another console may require replacing a saved profile.
Accounts and Favorites
Do I need an account to play games?
No. You can play without signing in. An account is required for Favorites, server-side Cloud Saves, saved controls profiles, and Supporter features.
Can I log in with either my username or email address?
Yes. The standard login form accepts either the username or email address attached to your 1UPHeart account.
What information does Google sign-in use?
Google sign-in uses a verified email address and Google’s account identifier to create or link your 1UPHeart account. If a new account is needed, the website generates a unique username from the email address. It does not request access to Google Drive, contacts, or unrelated Google data.
What happens if I use Google sign-in with an email already registered here?
The verified Google identity is linked to the existing account with that email address rather than creating a duplicate account.
Can I change my password and still use Google sign-in?
Yes. Password changes in Account Settings affect username or email login. Google sign-in remains a separate way to access the same linked account.
How do I add or remove a favorite game?
Use the Save to Favorites button on a game page. Press it again to remove the game, or remove it from the Favorite Games section of your account.
Are Favorites available on my other devices?
Yes. Favorites are stored with your account, so the same list appears after you sign in on another device.
Supporter Subscription and Billing
What does an active Supporter subscription include?
It includes one cloud save for every exact game version, one controls profile for every supported console, a personal avatar, and an ad-free experience. It also directly supports the operation and growth of 1UPHeart.
How much does Supporter cost?
The monthly plan is $3.99 USD per month. The annual plan is $39.99 USD per year. Current prices are also shown in the Supporter section before checkout.
Do the monthly and annual plans have different features?
No. Both plans unlock the same Supporter features. They differ only in billing period and price.
Does the subscription renew automatically?
Yes. Monthly and annual subscriptions renew at the end of their billing period until they are cancelled. Your account shows the next renewal date while the subscription remains active.
Who processes Supporter payments?
Stripe handles checkout, payment methods, invoices, renewals, and cancellation. 1UPHeart receives the subscription status needed to enable account features but does not store your full card details on the website.
Where can I update my payment method or view invoices?
Open the Supporter section of your account and select Manage Billing. This opens Stripe’s secure customer portal for payment methods, invoices, plan management, and cancellation.
How do I cancel my Supporter subscription?
Open the Supporter section, select Manage Billing, and cancel through Stripe’s customer portal. The account page then shows that cancellation is scheduled and states when Supporter access will end.
Does Supporter access end immediately when I cancel?
No. Access continues through the paid billing period and ends on the date shown in your account and Stripe portal.
What happens to my cloud saves after the subscription ends?
Your existing cloud saves remain available. The account returns to the regular saving limit, so creating a save for a new game may require replacing one. You can continue to view, load, download, or delete compatible existing saves.
Are Supporter accounts ad-free?
Yes. Active Supporter accounts are ad-free.
Does Supporter purchase access to games or downloadable ROM files?
No. Gameplay access is free. Supporter pays for expanded account features and helps fund the service; it does not sell game content, ROM downloads, virtual currency, or prizes.
Supporter Avatars
Who can upload a personal avatar?
Personal avatar upload is available while the account has active Supporter access. The avatar manager appears in the Supporter section of the account.
Which avatar files are accepted?
Use a JPG, PNG, or WebP image no larger than 5 MB. The source image must be at least 128 by 128 pixels.
How is my avatar cropped and stored?
The avatar editor lets you move and resize a square crop within the source image. The website then processes that crop into a 128 by 128 pixel PNG for consistent display.
Where is my avatar visible?
Your avatar is public and appears in the account control in the site header and beside your comments. Do not upload an image you do not want other visitors to see.
What appears if I do not upload a Supporter avatar?
The website uses the Supporter crown as the default Supporter account icon. If a custom avatar is present, the crown appears as a Supporter indicator when the header avatar is hovered.
What happens to my avatar when Supporter access ends?
The custom Supporter avatar stops being displayed and the normal signed-in account icon returns. You can also remove your custom avatar manually from the Supporter section while the avatar manager is available.
Languages and Game Versions
Why can the same game use different ROMs in different languages?
Some games have distinct USA, European, Japanese, or translated releases. A localized game page can use the regional ROM that best suits its audience instead of forcing every language to launch the English version.
Does changing the website language always change the language inside the game?
No. The page interface and description can be localized even when no separate ROM exists for that language. The language shown inside the game depends on the actual regional or translated ROM assigned to that page.
How can I tell which game version is running?
Check the Version field on the game page. It shows the ROM filename without the full server path, including available region, translation, revision, or other version information encoded in that filename.
Will the same cloud save work on every translated page?
Only when those pages launch the same exact ROM with the same emulator core. Pages using a different regional or translated ROM require a separate compatible save.
Do controls profiles depend on the page language?
No. Controls profiles are console-specific. A profile can be loaded across translated game pages that use the same console profile, even when their page language or ROM version differs.
Comments, Problems, and Requests
How do I report a game that does not start or works incorrectly?
Leave a comment on the affected game page. Include the game version shown on the page, your browser and device, what you expected, what happened instead, and the steps that reproduce the problem.
How do I report incorrect controls, text, categories, or game information?
Leave a comment on that game page and describe the incorrect item and the correction you recommend. Keeping the report on the affected page makes the game and ROM version unambiguous.
Where should I request a game or suggest a new feature?
Use the comments. For a game-specific request, comment on the closest relevant game page. For a broader feature request, leave a clear comment explaining the workflow you want and why it would help.
Do I need an account to leave a comment?
No. On game pages, a name and comment are required, while email is optional. Signed-in users can comment through their account identity, and active Supporter avatars appear with their comments.
