Overview and Gameplay
John Morris and Eric Lecarde pursue the resurrected vampire Elizabeth Bartley across Europe in this original 1994 Genesis entry. Choose John’s versatile whip or Eric’s long-reaching spear, then battle through six linear stages filled with platforming hazards, minibosses, and large set-piece encounters.
Each hero has distinct routes and movement abilities. John can swing from suitable ceilings, while Eric can charge a powerful high jump. Passwords preserve progress, and defeated enemies, treasure bags, remaining health, and unused jewels contribute to the score.
Controls And Mechanics
- Directions: Walk, crouch, use stairs, and aim attacks.
- A: Attack with the equipped whip or spear.
- B: Jump. Eric can charge his Mega Jump while crouching.
- C: Use the selected special weapon. Holding upward while pressing C performs a stronger attack at a higher jewel cost.
- Weapon crests strengthen the main weapon, while jewels fuel axes, sacred water, boomerangs, and other special attacks.
The game supports one player only.
Version Notes
The North American release is harder than the Japanese version, titled Vampire Killer. Unlike the censored European release, Castlevania: The New Generation, it retains the original blood effects and violent imagery.
