Overview and Gameplay
A laboratory accident hurls physicist Lester Chaykin onto a hostile alien planet, where survival depends on observation, precise timing, and an uneasy alliance with a fellow prisoner. Out of This World is the North American Genesis version of Éric Chahi’s cinematic adventure, originally released as Another World.
Players cross prisons, caverns, industrial areas, and an alien city through platforming, environmental puzzles, and dangerous encounters. Most hazards kill Lester instantly, but checkpoint passwords preserve progress. There is no score, inventory, or character upgrading.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move, crouch, climb, and interact with the environment using the directional controls.
- Run for longer jumps and to escape fast-moving threats.
- Kick while unarmed, then use the alien pistol for normal shots.
- Hold the firing control to create an energy barrier or charge a stronger blast that breaks barriers and certain walls.
- The game supports one player only; Lester’s alien companion is controlled by the game.
Version Notes
The game is known as Another World in Europe and Outer World in Japan. This expanded console adaptation includes a prologue and additional playable material not found in the earliest computer release.
