Overview and Gameplay

With Earth ruined by pollution and targeted by the Gulfer space force, pilot Dias takes a prototype fighter into eight stages of horizontal shooting action. Gaiares was created for the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis rather than adapted from an arcade game.

Its defining feature is the WOZ weapon system, called TOZ in the North American version. The satellite attaches to enemies and copies their weapons. Capturing the same type repeatedly raises its power, while death returns the player to a checkpoint and removes the accumulated weapon strength. Alternate routes, large bosses, reactive enemy patterns, and narrow passages contribute to its demanding reputation.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Move the fighter.
  • A: Cycle between low, medium, and maximum movement speed.
  • B: Fire the current weapon; hold for rapid fire.
  • C: Launch or detach the weapon-copying satellite.
  • Start: Begin, pause, or resume play.

The game supports one player only.

Version Notes

The Japanese presentation calls the satellite WOZ and names the pilot Dias and his ally Luanne. The North American localization changes these to TOZ, Dan, and Alexis.
