Overview and Gameplay
Giant gods fight over the ruined world of Urth in Primal Rage, the Sega Genesis version of Atari Games’ monster fighting arcade game. Players choose beasts such as Sauron, Talon, Blizzard, Chaos, Armadon, Vertigo, or Diablo and battle through one-on-one fights against the computer or another player.
The game is built around big creature attacks, brutal special moves, stun pressure, and post-match finishing moves. It is remembered more for its dinosaur-and-monster spectacle than for being one of the smoothest fighters on Genesis.
Controls And Mechanics
- Movement uses the directional pad for walking, jumping, crouching, blocking, and special move inputs.
- Attacks are split into high quick, high fierce, low quick, and low fierce strikes.
- The stun gauge matters alongside health. When it is drained, the fighter becomes vulnerable.
- Special moves often require button holds with direction inputs, making the six-button pad more comfortable than the standard three-button setup.
- Two players can fight each other in versus play. There is no cooperative mode.
Version Notes
This Genesis and Mega Drive release is a cartridge port of the arcade game. It keeps the monster roster and core fighting structure, but the presentation is scaled down from the arcade hardware.
