Overview and Gameplay
Harrier returns to defend Fantasyland from waves of machines, monsters, dragons, and other surreal threats. Space Harrier II is a console-first sequel to Sega’s arcade shooter and was one of the Japanese Mega Drive’s launch titles.
The action uses a behind-the-character, pseudo-3D view. Harrier automatically flies forward while the player moves across the screen, fires at approaching enemies, avoids projectiles and scenery, and battles a boss at the end of each area. Twelve areas can be selected as a starting point, with a Final Chapter unlocked after the main stages are cleared.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move Harrier in eight directions and fire lasers with any main action button.
- Colliding with enemies, shots, or solid obstacles usually costs one life.
- Higher scores award extra lives, while bonus rounds let Harrier destroy targets from a flying saucer without taking damage.
- Options include difficulty, starting lives, vertical control reversal, rapid fire, and a music test.
- This version supports one player only.
