Overview and Gameplay
The Galaxy Federation sends the FIRE LEO-04 Rynex against a vast enemy armada in Thunder Force IV, a technically ambitious horizontal shooter widely regarded among the Mega Drive’s strongest arcade-style games. Ten stages combine high-speed combat, large vertically scrolling battlefields, environmental hazards, and enormous bosses. The first four stages can be tackled in any order before the campaign continues along a fixed route.
Controls And Mechanics
- Movement: steer freely across the scrolling battlefield.
- Weapons: fire continuously and cycle through collected systems including Blade, Railgun, Snake, Free Way, and Hunter.
- Speed: change the Rynex’s engine setting during play for precise movement or rapid repositioning.
- Support: Claw satellites add firepower and help block some shots, while shields absorb damage.
- Thunder Sword: after Stage 5, stop firing to charge this powerful attack, then release it with heavy recoil.
This is a single-player game. Losing a life removes the selected special weapon but preserves the rest of the collected arsenal.
Version Notes
The European PAL release keeps the title Thunder Force IV. In North America, the same Mega Drive game was released as Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar.
