Overview and Gameplay

The red dragon Gildiss threatens the kingdom of Malus, and five adventurers set out before the spell holding him asleep ends. The King of Dragons is the USA SNES port of Capcom’s arcade fantasy beat ’em up, rebuilt for two-player home play.

Players choose the Elf, Wizard, Fighter, Cleric, or Dwarf, then battle through 16 monster-filled stages. Treasure and enemy defeats give experience, while upgraded weapons, defensive gear, health fruit, and extra continues help against bosses.

Controls And Mechanics

  • directions move through the side-view battlefield.
  • Y uses the character’s weapon, and B jumps.
  • X summons magic at the cost of health.
  • A raises a manual shield when that option is enabled.
  • Two players fight simultaneously as a team, not in alternating or versus play.

Version Notes

This is the USA/NTSC SNES release, separate from the Japanese and European SNES versions, the 1991 arcade original, and later compilation releases. The arcade game supported three players, while this SNES version supports two-player co-op and has no battery-backed save.
