Overview and Gameplay
Tiki the kiwi escapes Wally Walrus and crosses New Zealand to rescue his captured friends. This NES conversion of Taito’s arcade game combines platforming, shooting, swimming, and exploration across 20 maze-like stages arranged in five worlds. Players follow maps, find cages, defeat enemies, manage limited air underwater, and face bosses or demanding obstacle sequences.
Controls And Mechanics
- Movement: Run with the directional pad, jump with A, and tap A while falling to slow Tiki’s descent.
- Combat: Fire arrows and collected weapons with B. Bombs, lasers, temporary invincibility, enemy-freezing items, and screen-clearing magic broaden the basic attack.
- Vehicles: Knock enemies from balloons, then steer them through vertical routes while avoiding spikes and incoming fire.
- Multiplayer: Two players take alternating turns rather than playing simultaneously.
Version Notes
The North American release uses the title Kiwi Kraze. European and Australian NES editions retained the name New Zealand Story. The USA cartridge is the NTSC version published by Taito.
