Overview and Gameplay

Pokémon Gold follows a young trainer through towns, routes, buildings, and caves in an 8-bit version of the Johto adventure. The campaign advances through scripted events, trainer battles, badge challenges, and key items that open later areas.

Wild encounters and trainer fights use turn-based commands. Pokémon gain experience, increase their levels, and form a party for upcoming battles. Maps, encounter tables, and event sequences differ from the Game Boy Color story.

Controls And Mechanics

The directional pad moves the trainer and navigates battle menus. Commands select Pokémon actions, items, and party members during combat. Progress can be stored through the cartridge’s save system.

Some grass areas produce rare encounters, while selected breakable-rock tiles can trigger battles. Wild species and levels follow altered distributions created for this adaptation.

Version Notes

This unlicensed Chinese-language Famicom adaptation was independently programmed by Mars Production. It uses redrawn 8-bit graphics, replacement music, modified maps, altered encounters, and rewritten event behavior for NES-compatible hardware.
