Overview and Gameplay
Pokémon Emerald Version follows a young Trainer across the Hoenn region. After receiving a starter Pokémon from Professor Birch, the Trainer catches wild Pokémon, builds a party, defeats eight Gym Leaders, collects Badges, and challenges the Pokémon League. Team Magma and Team Aqua drive the central conflict, while Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza shape the revised story. Towns, routes, caves, and waterways form one connected region, with new areas opening through story events, Badges, and field-use HM moves. Optional activities include Pokémon Contests, Berry growing, Secret Bases, breeding, rematches, and the Battle Frontier.
Controls And Mechanics
Battles use turn-based commands for moves, items, switching Pokémon, and escape attempts. Pokémon gain experience, learn moves, evolve, hold items, and use type matchups, Abilities, HP, PP, and status effects. The party holds up to six Pokémon, with additional captures stored on the PC. Losing every usable Pokémon returns the Trainer to the last Pokémon Center and removes some carried money.
- Movement: The directional pad moves the Trainer and menu cursor.
- Actions: A confirms and interacts; B cancels and enables running after obtaining the Running Shoes.
- Multiplayer: Link Cable and Wireless Adapter features support trading, versus battles, Multi Battles, Contests, Berry activities, and wireless minigames.
Version Notes
Emerald is an enhanced companion version to Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. It revises the storyline, changes Pokémon encounters, adds animated battle introductions, expands rematches, and introduces the seven-facility Battle Frontier.
