Overview and Gameplay

Hood is preparing a meteor attack, and International Rescue has only 60 in-game days to stop him. Thunderbirds for NES is a licensed vertical scrolling shooter developed by Pack-In-Video and published in North America by Activision.

The player flies assigned Thunderbird craft through danger zones marked on a world map. Missions take place across areas such as North America, the Indian Ocean, Asia, and the final space operation. Clearing targets opens more locations, while failure costs repair time.

Controls And Mechanics

  • The directional pad moves the craft and adjusts speed while flying.
  • The main weapon fires forward, with firepower raised by Energy Point pickups.
  • Orbital Devices add extra shots around the craft, and their configurations can change firing direction.
  • Life Point pickups restore health, while damage reduces both Life Points and Energy Points.
  • This is a solo game, with no verified two-player or co-op mode.

Version Notes

  • The USA NES release uses the English title Thunderbirds and was published by Activision.
  • The Japanese Famicom release was titled サンダーバード and published by Pack-In-Video.
