Overview and Gameplay
Toobin’ sends Bif and Jet down obstacle-filled rivers in inner tubes, turning a downhill float into a score-chasing arcade run. This NES version adapts Atari Games’ 1988 arcade game for Tengen’s home release, with players steering through gates, dodging hazards, collecting treasures, and reaching whirlpools to continue into later rivers.
The flow of the water, enemy placement, and narrow routes make positioning important. Points come from treasure, gates, and bonuses, while missed gates can break the score multiplier.
Controls And Mechanics
- Movement: the directional pad steers the rider while river momentum keeps the action moving downward.
- Cans: A and B throw cans to the right or left, giving the player a limited way to hit enemies or clear threats.
- Items: floating cans refill ammunition, patches repair the tube, beach balls provide a pump-up bonus, and letter pickups can be traded for rewards.
- Multiplayer: two-player mode is turn-based, with Bif and Jet competing rather than playing simultaneous co-op.
Version Notes
This is the unlicensed Tengen NES release. The NES controls differ from the arcade version by using direct pad movement and two buttons for left and right can throws.
