Overview and Gameplay

Colored tiles race down a conveyor toward a five-position paddle in Klax, the Japanese Famicom conversion of Atari Games’ arcade puzzle game. Catch tiles and drop them into a 5×5 well, forming groups of three or more matching colors horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Each wave sets a specific goal, such as making a number of Klaxes, reaching a score, surviving a tile count, or creating lines in a required direction. The game spans 100 waves, with later stages adding pressure, colors, and tougher targets.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Use the directions to move the paddle, speed approaching tiles, or flip the top carried tile back onto the conveyor.
  • Press A to drop the top tile into the selected column. The paddle can hold up to five tiles.
  • Longer lines, diagonal matches, intersecting Klaxes, cascades, wild tiles, and the BIG-X pattern produce larger scores.
  • Two players can compete simultaneously on split playfields, each trying to clear the same type of wave faster.
