Overview and Gameplay

Joe Musashi returns after Neo Zeed destroys his ninja clan, kills his master, and kidnaps Naoko. This original Genesis sequel sends him through eight districts, each divided into three scenes, with platforming, enemy encounters, and a boss at the end of every district.

Combat combines limited shuriken, close-range sword or kick attacks, precise jumps, and four ninjutsu arts. Power-ups restore health, add weapons or lives, strengthen attacks, or grant another ninjutsu use. The final rescue is timed and can lead to two endings.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: walk, crouch, crouch-walk, change planes, and choose ninjutsu while paused.
  • A: use the selected ninjutsu.
  • B: attack with shuriken or a close-range strike.
  • C: jump; press again near the apex for a somersault.
  • Start: start, pause, select ninjutsu, and resume.

The game is strictly single-player. Difficulty settings alter starting lives, while continues restart the current district.

Version Notes

This USA and Europe Rev A release corresponds to internal REV02. It adds the Spider-Man copyright screen, keeps Spider-Man as the round-six boss without the earlier Batman transformation, and still includes the Monster-G boss. The Japanese release is titled The Super Shinobi.
