Overview and Gameplay

Pilot a jet fighter through 23 fast-moving combat stages, destroying enemy aircraft while dodging missiles, terrain, and incoming fire. This Japanese Famicom conversion adapts Sega’s arcade After Burner II design to 8-bit hardware with a chase-camera view, automatic forward movement, resupply sequences, and hazardous obstacle courses.

The Vulcan cannon has unlimited ammunition, while guided missiles are limited and work best after the targeting box locks onto an enemy. Later stages increase the pressure with denser attacks and threats approaching from behind.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Move and bank the aircraft; vertical movement uses an inverted flight-style layout.
  • A: Fire the Vulcan cannon.
  • B: Launch a guided missile.
  • Start: Begin play or activate the afterburner boost during a stage.
  • Select: Pause the game.
  • A rapid horizontal reversal performs an evasive roll.

Version Notes

The Japanese cartridge was officially titled After Burner, although some databases and ROM sets label it After Burner II because of its arcade lineage. It is a distinct Sunsoft Famicom conversion rather than the Sega Master System version.
