Overview and Gameplay

Zeus releases a sealed beast warrior to rescue Athena from a demonic captor. Juuouki is the Japanese Famicom version of Sega’s Altered Beast, rebuilt as a single-player side-scrolling action game with eight stages instead of the arcade original’s five.

Defeat monsters, advance through each area, and collect Morph Orbs from pale two-headed wolves. The first two strengthen the warrior, while the third triggers the stage’s beast transformation. Reaching beast form unlocks the boss battle; missed orbs can extend the stage with additional enemy waves.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Move, crouch, and jump. Press upward twice for a higher jump.
  • A: Punch in human form and fire the beast’s projectile attack.
  • B: Kick in human form and use the beast’s close-range or movement attack.
  • The game uses a health meter and limited lives, with continuation available from the last reached stage.
  • This version supports one player only.

Version Notes

The Famicom conversion adds three transformations not found in the arcade game: lion, blue shark, and phoenix. It also introduces new stages and bosses, but removes the arcade version’s simultaneous cooperative play.
