Overview and Gameplay
High-speed highway racing pushes a single driver across a coast-to-coast journey where checkpoints and strict timers determine survival on each stage. Traffic density increases as the route progresses, with winding roads, elevation changes, and visual shifts from urban skylines to rocky mountain stretches and coastal highways. The goal is to reach each finish point before time runs out while managing speed, collisions, and tight cornering on multi-lane roads.
The structure is stage-based, with each course introducing new traffic patterns and environmental themes. A selectable vehicle at the start changes handling feel slightly, while progression relies on learning road layouts and maintaining momentum through dense traffic.
Controls And Mechanics
- Steering across multiple lanes to avoid civilian traffic and roadside obstacles
- Acceleration and braking to manage speed through corners and straightaways
- Turbo activation at high speed for bursts of acceleration
- Slipstreaming behind other cars to gain speed advantages
- Checkpoint system that extends time when reached
- Stage progression based on completing timed courses
Version Notes
The Japanese release is known as Highway Star and supported the Famicom 3D System accessory. The NES version was localized as Rad Racer and adapted to use red and blue anaglyph 3D glasses instead of shutter-based hardware. An arcade PlayChoice-10 version also existed with reduced features compared to the home release.
