Overview and Gameplay
Super Mario Bros 16 sends Mario into Karakuri Land to rescue Princess Kurumi from a mechanical amusement park. Eight themed stages include a sweets region, miniature town, moving railway, haunted forest, underground area, cliff route, maze, and Phantom Castle. The first three stages may be cleared in any order, while later areas lead toward the final castle.
Each stage requires Mario to cross platforms, avoid hazards, break bells for items, defeat enemies, and overcome a boss. Phantom Castle contains a sequence of boss rooms before the final rescue challenge.
Controls And Mechanics
The directional pad moves, crouches, and selects techniques. A jumps, while B swings the spinning weapon; directional input allows upward and downward attacks. Start pauses and opens the technique screen.
Gourds supply special attacks and transformations. Available powers include a ranged sword wave, lightning protection, stronger frog jumps, invincible elephant movement, and controlled flight in hawk form. Bells can release health, extra lives, speed boosts, temporary enemy freezes, and score items. Losing all health or touching a fatal hazard costs a life.
Version Notes
This unauthorized Mario-themed hack replaces the protagonist and title graphics from Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 2 while retaining its stages, bosses, spinning attack, transformations, and Princess Kurumi storyline. It begins with ten lives.
