Overview and Gameplay

Mario and Luigi cross Dinosaur Land to rescue Princess Peach and free Yoshi’s friends from Bowser and the Koopalings. The connected world map leads to side-scrolling courses, Ghost Houses, fortresses, castles, Star Road, and the Special Zone. Normal and secret exits open new routes, with 96 exits required for full map completion. Mario and Luigi can be switched on the map, and Luigi has higher, slower jumps and looser traction. The cartridge also includes Mario Bros. Classic and Battle modes.

Controls And Mechanics

Running builds speed, while jumping, swimming, Spin Jumps, cape attacks, fireballs, carried objects, and Yoshi’s abilities handle obstacles and enemies. Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Cape Feathers, Starmen, coins, Dragon Coins, extra lives, and a reserve item support each attempt. Five Dragon Coins in a course award a life, 100 coins grant another, and 100 Goal Stars trigger a bonus game. Damage removes a power state, while pits, crushing, or an expired timer cost a life. Linked systems support simultaneous multiplayer in the included Mario Bros. modes.

Version Notes

This Game Boy Advance adaptation adds character-specific physics, voice clips, a results screen, expanded Dragon Coin tracking, pause-menu saving, new completion rewards, revised graphics and sound, and stage adjustments for the handheld display.
