Overview and Gameplay

Armakuni is pulled into modern Manhattan, where he must pursue the revived shogun Kunitoki through Central Park, streets, sewers, offices, and a guarded mansion. This is an isometric action-adventure built around exploration, combat, item use, and precise positioning.

Each of the six stages is a network of fixed screens. Progress depends on finding weapons and utility objects, solving location-based puzzles, surviving enemies, and reaching the next area. Passwords let players resume from completed stages.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Movement: directions move Armakuni along the isometric axes. A vaults while moving.
  • Combat: while standing, A punches or uses the equipped weapon, while B kicks. Most enemies recover after the first knockout and must be defeated again.
  • Items: B picks up or uses objects. Holding Select with A cycles held items, while Select with B cycles weapons.
  • Survival: the power meter represents health, lost power costs a life, and hamburgers grant an extra life.

Version Notes

The North American NES release is a retitled conversion of Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance, not an adaptation of the first game. Its seven source locations are condensed into six named stages, with some Basement material incorporated into the Office.
