Overview and Gameplay
Willow leaves his village to protect the child destined to defeat Queen Bavmorda, turning the fantasy film into a Capcom action RPG for NES. Unlike Capcom’s separate arcade game, this version focuses on overhead exploration, towns, clues, equipment, magic, and character growth.
The player travels through forests, villages, caves, and dangerous regions while talking to characters, collecting swords and shields, learning spells, and gaining experience from combat. Progress depends on finding the right items and information, not clearing short linear stages.
Controls And Mechanics
- Willow moves in four directions across the overworld, towns, and dungeon-like areas.
- Sword attacks are used for close combat, while magic provides offensive and utility effects.
- Equipment and item menus let the player manage swords, shields, spells, and key items.
- Experience raises Willow’s strength and survivability over the course of the quest.
- Some weapons feel heavier until Willow becomes strong enough to handle them well.
- The game is single-player only.
Version Notes
This NES action RPG is separate from Capcom’s side-scrolling arcade Willow and from earlier computer adaptations of the film.
