Overview and Gameplay

Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia fight through South Town after Yuri Sakazaki is kidnapped. This Sega Genesis conversion of SNK’s Neo Geo fighter follows a fixed one-player campaign, with Ryo or Robert facing eight opponents before the final confrontation.

Combat centers on heavy strikes, throws, defensive movement, and the Spirit Gauge. Special Deathblows consume Spirit and weaken as the gauge falls. Taunts drain an opponent’s Spirit, while bonus challenges can improve life or Spirit capacity. Matches use configurable round and time settings, and victories award bonuses for remaining life and time.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Move, jump, crouch, dash, retreat, and block with the directional controls.
  • Punch and kick attacks include stronger combinations, low attacks, close throws, and wall-assisted triangle jumps.
  • Hold an attack button to restore Spirit, but recharging leaves the fighter vulnerable.
  • The six-button controller gives easier access to taunts and advanced actions than the three-button layout.
  • Two players can fight simultaneously in versus mode with all ten fighters and selectable stages.

Version Notes

The USA release has Normal and Hard difficulty settings and limited continues. Compared with the Neo Geo original, it removes the dynamic camera zoom and reduces animation, background detail, speech, and sound. The Japanese Mega Drive edition is titled Ryūko no Ken and includes easier settings plus unlimited continues.
