Overview and Gameplay
Chelnov dons an alien-powered Atomic Suit and races through a worldwide invasion in Atomic Runner, Data East’s 1992 Sega Genesis conversion of its 1988 arcade game. The screen scrolls automatically through seven stages, including laboratories, jungles, deserts, snowfields, and New York. Enemies attack from both directions, so survival depends on quick reactions, route memorization, weapon choice, and knowing when to turn and fire backward. Each stage ends with a boss, and one hit normally costs a life before play resumes from a checkpoint.
Controls And Mechanics
- Directional Pad: Move within the scrolling playfield.
- A: Jump.
- B: Shoot.
- C with Left or Right: Change the direction Chelnov faces.
Six weapons include the Laser, Boomerang, Light Ring, Spiked Balls, Morning Star, and Homing Missile. Pickups improve range, projectile speed and power, jumping, and rapid fire. Difficulty, starting lives, continues, rapid-fire options, and alternate controller layouts can be adjusted.
Version Notes
The North American and European releases are titled Atomic Runner, while the Japanese Mega Drive version is called Chelnov. The Genesis edition substantially reworks the arcade game’s story, graphics, enemies, bosses, and presentation.
