Overview and Gameplay

The Barrax forces have captured two commanders on Terrania, sending one or two pilots into a vertical assault across the planet’s surface and underground strongholds. Battle Squadron is a 1990 Genesis conversion of the Amiga shooter, built around dense enemy formations, large targets, weapon upgrades, and simultaneous cooperative play.

The surface route loops until the player enters the subterranean areas. Three underground sections must be cleared before the final confrontation. Its adjustable bullet speed and on-screen bullet limit let players substantially change the challenge.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Move with the directional pad and fire the primary weapon with A or C.
  • Press B to activate a Nova bomb, clearing hostile projectiles while damaging enemies.
  • Colored capsules switch or improve four weapons: Magma Wave, Magnetic Torpedoes, Anti-Matter Particle Beam, and Emerald Laser.
  • Each weapon has five power levels, while losing a life reduces its strength.
  • Two players can fight together simultaneously on the same playfield.

Version Notes

The Genesis port uses modified layouts, faster pacing, rearranged music by Rob Hubbard, and added parallax effects. It has less visual detail than the Amiga original, and some underground foreground effects can obstruct the action. The USA and European cartridges share the same documented game version.
