Overview and Gameplay
An explosive football turns every drive into a race against disaster. Cyberball is Sega’s 1990 Genesis conversion of Atari Games’ 1988 arcade sports game, replacing human athletes with seven-player robot teams. The offense must reach midfield to cool the ball, score a touchdown, or risk an explosion when a critical ball carrier is tackled.
Matches use six three-minute periods. There are no punts or field goals, so teams keep attacking through running, passing, and option plays. Successful actions earn money for replacing or upgrading robots. The one-player League mode includes 28 teams, a 16-game schedule, playoffs, and password-based progress.
Controls And Mechanics
- Directions move the controlled robot, navigate selections, and aim pitches or passes.
- A, B, or C perform the same contextual action, including confirming choices, snapping, pitching, passing, and activating a defender’s turbo boost.
- Robot damage accumulates through tackles; badly damaged machines can explode and cause fumbles.
- Two players compete simultaneously in local versus matches. League play is solo only.
Version Notes
The international release is region-aware. Japanese Mega Drive hardware reveals Mega Modem network features that are hidden on Western systems. The Japanese title is CyberBall: Foot Ball in the 21st Century.
