Overview and Gameplay

Matching stones by color or symbol across a shrinking board turns every placement into a careful constraint puzzle. In Ishido: The Way of Stones, the objective is to place all available stones onto a limited grid where each move must connect by either matching color or matching symbol. As more stones are placed, open spaces become harder to use, creating a steady progression of planning, adaptation, and spatial problem-solving.

The gameplay loop revolves around selecting stones and finding valid positions that satisfy adjacency rules. Each session plays out differently depending on tile order, which keeps the board state constantly shifting toward tighter constraints.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Move a cursor across the board
  • Select and place stones following matching rules
  • Cycle through available stones
  • Navigate simple menu functions

There are no combat systems or levels, only continuous puzzle play focused on efficient placement and board completion.

Version Notes

This Sega Genesis version adapts a mouse-driven computer puzzle into a gamepad-controlled format, preserving the core matching mechanics while simplifying interaction for console play.
