Overview and Gameplay

Richter Belmont enters Dracula’s castle to rescue Annet and Maria and bring down Count Dracula once again. Akumajou Dracula XX is the Japanese Super Famicom version of the SNES game known in North America as Castlevania: Dracula X.

This is a side-scrolling action platformer built around careful jumps, enemy patterns, whip attacks, sub-weapons, boss fights, and branching stage routes. It reworks the story and ideas of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood into a different cartridge game rather than directly porting the PC Engine CD original.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Richter moves, crouches, climbs stairs, and descends stairs with the directional pad.
  • The whip is the main attack, while hearts fuel sub-weapons such as the dagger, axe, boomerang, holy water, watch, and key.
  • The Item Crash uses stored hearts for a stronger screen-clearing style attack tied to the current item.
  • The key opens locked doors and is tied to rescue and alternate route progression.
  • The game is single-player only.

Version Notes

The Japanese release is titled Akumajou Dracula XX. Western releases were renamed Castlevania: Dracula X in North America and Castlevania: Vampire’s Kiss in Europe. The Japanese version retains visual details that were changed in some Western releases.
