Overview and Gameplay

The Avatar returns to Britannia after 200 years, with disappearances in Trinsic and the Fellowship’s influence pointing toward the Guardian’s Black Gate. Ultima: The Black Gate adapts Ultima VII into a solo overhead SNES action-RPG.

Play centers on exploring towns, caves, dungeons, and wilderness areas, talking to NPCs, opening doors and containers, collecting keys, equipping items, gaining levels, and using magic to follow the quest.

Controls And Mechanics

  • The Avatar moves directly while menus handle inventory, conversation keywords, and game settings.
  • Items can be readied to A-hand and B-hand slots for use during play.
  • Y handles interaction such as talking, opening, getting, and using objects.
  • L and R cast readied fast-magic spells.
  • This SNES version is single-player only.

Version Notes

This is the U.S. SNES version of the 1992 DOS RPG. It is heavily redesigned, with a solo Avatar, smaller world, reduced dialogue and object interaction, softened story content, simplified magic, and action-style combat.
