Overview and Gameplay

The sorcerer Vookimedlo kidnaps Miho and transforms JuJu into an ape, leaving him to fight through six stages and reclaim his human form. This 1991 Famicom conversion of TAD Corporation’s 1989 arcade game combines platforming with multidirectional projectile combat. JuJu shoots from his mouth, stomps enemies, climbs vines, swims, collects keys, and defeats a boss at the end of each stage.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions move JuJu, aim shots, crouch, and climb.
  • A jumps, while B fires the current projectile.
  • Landing on an enemy performs a powerful stomp.
  • Temporary upgrades include larger shots, wave shots, a three-way spread, flames, and a chargeable attack.
  • Helmets grant temporary invulnerability, sneakers improve jumping, clocks add time, and every 20 coins awards an extra life.
  • Two players take turns rather than playing simultaneously.

Version Notes

The Japanese release uses the title JuJu Densetsu, features one-hit deaths, and supports alternating two-player play. The North American NES version was titled Toki and added a heart-based health system.
