Overview and Gameplay

Al Unser Jr. lends his name and likeness to an open-wheel championship spanning 16 international circuits. This North American adaptation of Data East’s World Grand-Prix: Pole to Finish combines behind-the-car arcade racing with manual shifting, qualifying, fuel use, damage, pit stops and car setup.

The World Grand Prix Series includes practice, a single qualifying lap and races of varying length. Players can use Unser’s fully upgraded car or create a driver whose vehicle improves by earning championship points. Two time-trial modes provide practice with computer cars or solo lap attempts.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Steering and gears: Left and right steer, while up and down change gears.
  • Driving: A accelerates and B brakes.
  • Turbo: Hold up while accelerating in third gear to engage the limited boost supply.
  • Race management: Monitor fuel and damage, then enter the pits for refuelling or repairs.
  • Multiplayer: Time Trial records alternating attempts for multiple players; there is no simultaneous racing.

Version Notes

The US edition adds Al Unser Jr. branding, advice and a fully upgraded selectable car. Japan received the game as World Grand-Prix: Pole to Finish, while Europe used the title Turbo Racing.
