Overview and Gameplay
Step into the arena as a contender in five events adapted from the American television competition: Joust, The Wall, Human Cannonball, Powerball, and Assault. Each event becomes a distinct arcade challenge involving platform jumps, hand-over-hand climbing, timed rope swings, ball scoring, or projectile dodging.
Events can be attempted in any order across Preliminary, Quarterfinal, Semifinal, and Final rounds. Clear every event in all four rounds to reach the Eliminator, a final course of I-beams, a hand bike, conveyor belts, and zip-lines. Players begin with five lives, earn points through event-specific objectives, and can use passwords to resume progress.
Controls And Mechanics
- Joust: Aim pugil-stick attacks high, middle, or low, block incoming blows, and jump between pedestals.
- The Wall: Control the contender’s hands separately to climb while avoiding gaps and pursuing Gladiators.
- Human Cannonball: Catch and release a swinging rope with precise timing.
- Powerball and Assault: Move through overhead arenas, collect objects, score balls, use weapons, and avoid defenders.
- Two players: Competitors take alternating turns rather than playing simultaneously.
Version Notes
The NES edition is an original design rather than a conversion of the later computer, Genesis, or Super NES versions. Its event layouts and Eliminator structure are specific to this release.
