Overview and Gameplay

Beetlejuice helps the recently deceased Maitlands drive the Deetz family from their former home in this single-player NES adaptation. The adventure mixes side-view platforming with top-down exploration across the town, storm drains, house, graveyard, attic, and Afterlife.

Progress depends on collecting keys and quest items, opening doors, operating switches, navigating mazes, frightening people, and defeating bosses. Stomping beetles and gathering objects earns Help Vouchers, which can be spent at Recently Deceased Information Booths.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Movement: The directional pad moves Beetlejuice, enters or leaves doorways, and navigates menus.
  • Actions: A jumps in side-view areas. B stomps beetles or activates the selected scare in top-view sections. Select picks up or drops objects.
  • Scares: Temporary forms provide special abilities, including improved jumping, projectiles, or counters for particular enemies.
  • Survival: Three hits cost a life, some hazards defeat Beetlejuice instantly, and a limited continue system follows a game over.
