Overview and Gameplay
Bonk battles through Dinosaur Land using his oversized head after King Drool captures the Moon Princess. This late NES platformer converts Hudson Soft’s earlier PC Engine game into a compact side-scrolling adventure built around headbutts, aerial attacks, climbing, swimming, hidden routes, bonus areas, and large bosses.
Stages are divided into smaller areas filled with enemies, hazards, collectibles, and occasional alternate paths. Hearts and fruit restore health, while extra lives and scoring items reward exploration.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move and explore: Run, swim, climb, and enter certain passages with the directional pad.
- Jump: Leap across platforms and bite suitable walls to begin climbing.
- Headbutt: Attack enemies directly or press repeatedly in the air to spin, slow Bonk’s descent, and extend jumps.
- Meat power-ups: Temporary transformations increase Bonk’s strength and enable the screen-shaking Grand Bonk attack.
- Player mode: The NES version is strictly single-player.
Version Notes
The Japanese Famicom release is titled FC Genjin. The NES conversion uses redesigned stage layouts, altered mechanics, and reduced audiovisual detail compared with the original PC Engine version.
