Overview and Gameplay

Archaeologist Challenger pursues Don Waldorado, who has kidnapped Princess Maria. Four linked scenes change the format: cross the roof and interior of an express train, explore a 100-screen island from overhead, enter fountain caves to collect a key, ring, and crown, then climb the pyramid and defeat Waldorado. Completing the rescue begins another round with the difficulty raised by two settings.

Controls And Mechanics

The directional pad moves Challenger and ducks inside the train. A jumps in side-view scenes and throws knives on the island; B throws knives throughout the game. Every scene has a timer. Contact with enemies usually costs a life in the side-view scenes, while the island uses a life gauge that whales can refill. Temporary knife power-ups damage enemies that resist normal attacks. Falling, entering traps, running out of time, or exhausting the life gauge also causes a loss.

The title screen offers 16 difficulty settings that change enemy counts and which special enemies appear. Scene 3 awards 100,000 points for returning with a keyword before the timer falls below 80, or 10,000 points afterward.
