Overview and Gameplay

Build a four-skater lineup from fast thin players, balanced average players, and powerful stocky players, then take one of six national teams onto the ice. Ice Hockey uses compact, top-down matches built around passing, checking, charged shots, face-offs, penalties, and chaotic puck battles.

Each match has three periods. Players can adjust the game speed and choose periods lasting 7, 10, or 15 minutes. Tied games proceed to penalty shots and, when necessary, goalkeeper-free overtime. There is no season or campaign, so play centers on individual matches against the computer or a second player.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Use the directional pad to skate and aim passes, shots, and goalkeeper clearances.
  • Press A to pass on offense or body check and fight for the puck on defense.
  • Hold and release B for a stronger shot, tap it for a fake, or use it to switch defenders.
  • Before face-offs, rearrange skaters to change offensive and defensive positioning.
  • Two players compete simultaneously in local head-to-head matches.

Version Notes

The Western NES release replaces Japan with Sweden in the national-team selection. Its match and goal music also differs from the original Japanese Famicom Disk System edition.
