Overview and Gameplay
On the eve of the Normandy invasion, soldier Paul drives a heavily armed tank behind enemy lines to smash fortifications and destroy the enemy headquarters. SNK built this NES campaign as an expanded reworking of its arcade game T.N.K. III, adding branching roads, radio messages, passwords, a tactical map, and a longer continuous battlefield.
Viewed from above, the tank fights infantry, armor, artillery, aircraft, mines, ships, and large bosses. Alternate routes contain different hazards and encounters, while prisoners and radio reports provide guidance.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move with the directional pad. Hold B with a direction to redirect the turret independently of the tank.
- B fires the machine gun, while A fires the main cannon.
- Select opens the tactical sub-screen; Start begins or pauses play.
- Weapon pickups add rapid fire, explosive shells, armor-piercing rounds, or longer range. These upgrades consume limited ammunition and can be combined.
- Energy items repair the tank or add reserve energy. The game supports one player.
Version Notes
The Japanese release is titled Great Tank. The U.S. edition changes the hero’s name, replaces Nazi imagery with neutral symbols, and presents staff names instead of several Japanese credit aliases.
