Overview and Gameplay

Space agent Layla must rescue her partner Iris and destroy the Zil gene-recombination device hidden among eight asteroid fortresses. This 1986 dB-SOFT action game combines side-scrolling shooting, platforming and maze navigation across caverns and multi-floor bases.

Players search crates for weapons and supplies, collect a required password disk in each asteroid, defeat a boss and enter a score-focused space-bike bonus stage. Scrolling does not return to earlier areas, so missed routes and items can be costly. Iris joins Layla after being rescued and mirrors her movements and attacks.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Move, crouch and operate elevators.
  • A: Jump. Running and crouching affect jump height.
  • B: Fire the selected weapon.
  • Select: Cycle through weapons.
  • Start: Begin or pause the game.

The unlimited pistol can be upgraded, while weapons such as grenades, axes, a bazooka and flamethrower consume ammunition. Falling into pits reduces health and supplies instead of causing immediate death. Progress can be continued through an 18-character password system.

Version Notes

The cartridge title is officially stylized LayLa, with the Japanese title レイラ. It was released only for the Japanese Family Computer and received no official overseas NES localization.
