Overview and Gameplay
An elderly wizard enters the ruined city of Erinoch to find his missing mentor, Mordamir. Viewed from an isometric perspective, The Immortal mixes exploration, environmental puzzles, conversations, inventory management, magic and close-range sword fights.
The NES adventure spans seven dungeon levels filled with hidden traps, dangerous items and challenges that often demand precise timing or the correct solution. Players receive three lives per level, while certificate passwords restore progress. Sleeping on straw can recover strength and reveal clues through dreams.
Controls And Mechanics
- The directional pad moves the wizard and navigates the Wizard’s Pack.
- A and B cast fireballs, confirm choices, activate certain spells and help escape pits.
- During combat, B performs a jab. A direction with B produces a slash, while a direction with A performs a dodge.
- Select opens the inventory and pauses exploration. Start opens the restart or certificate screen.
- Repeated attacks cause fatigue, slowing the wizard until he pauses or relies on dodging.
Version Notes
The NES conversion has seven levels instead of the computer version’s eight, omitting the giant-spider level. Visuals and character sprites were simplified, some dialogue was expanded, and the North American release reduced the blood and elaborate death animations found in other versions.
