Overview and Gameplay
A hacked defense system sends armed machines through a city, drawing the Hard Corps into a conspiracy involving Colonel Bahamut and alien biotechnology. This original Sega Genesis entry is widely regarded as one of the console’s strongest action games.
Choose Ray, Sheena, Brad Fang, or Browny, each with four distinct special weapons. The run-and-gun campaign combines eight-direction shooting, large multi-phase bosses, vehicle sequences, branching decisions, route-specific stages, and six endings.
Controls And Mechanics
- Directions move the character and aim in eight directions.
- A cycles through collected weapons and bombs, B fires, and C jumps.
- Holding B and pressing A switches between moving fire and stationary precision aiming.
- Pressing C while holding diagonally downward performs an invulnerable offensive slide.
- Two players can fight simultaneously in cooperative play using different characters.
Version Notes
The USA/Korea release uses one-hit deaths and five continues. The Japanese version, Contra: The Hard Corps, provides a three-hit life gauge and unlimited continues. Europe received the altered title Probotector, with robotic characters and story changes.
