Overview and Gameplay

Mercenary pilot Billy takes the Black Eagle attack helicopter into six missions against an international narcotics organization. CrossFire mixes vertically scrolling helicopter combat with overhead, on-foot infiltration. Missions include an approach flight, an assault on base defenses, a ground rescue operation, an escape flight, and a boss encounter.

The first operations in Guatemala, Cuba, and Panama can be tackled in different orders. Successful missions award money for persistent helicopter weapons, bombs, firearms, and protective upgrades, making equipment choice an important part of the campaign.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Helicopter: Move, fire the main gun, launch bombs, and activate a temporary defensive shield.
  • On foot: Move Billy, shoot, jump or dodge, and call the Black Eagle for limited air support.
  • Power-ups can improve firepower, restore bombs, provide defense, add calls, or grant an extra life.
  • The game supports one player only.

Version Notes

The Japanese version was released as Super Airwolf. The North American edition removes the television license, renames the pilot and helicopter, replaces character references, and uses different flight music while retaining the same basic missions and gameplay.
