Overview and Gameplay
Billy and Jimmy Lee cross America, China, Japan, Italy, and Egypt in search of three Rosetta Stones before their rivals reach Cleopatra’s tomb. This Genesis beat ’em up adapts the 1990 arcade game with five linear missions, groups of enemies, boss battles, and a demanding coin economy.
Coins are spent in timed shops on extra fighters, weapons, power upgrades, and advanced techniques. Reserve martial artists replace a defeated hero, giving the campaign more variety than a standard single-character brawler.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move around each lane, punch, kick, jump, and perform a jumping stomp.
- Double-tap a direction to run, then attack for a charging headbutt.
- Purchased Tricks unlock special moves, while weapons include nunchaku and a long sword.
- Two players fight simultaneously as a cooperative team and share campaign resources such as time and coins.
Version Notes
The cartridge was sold as Double Dragon 3: The Arcade Game, while the title screen uses Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone. The Genesis port replaces real-money arcade purchases with an internal coin supply and supports two players instead of the arcade hardware’s possible three.
