Overview and Gameplay
Obelix has been captured by a Roman patrol, sending Asterix across Gaul, the Roman Empire, and Egypt to rescue him. This Europe-only SNES platformer from Infogrames adapts the Asterix comic world into long side-scrolling stages with Roman soldiers, animals, traps, hidden bonuses, and ancient-world scenery.
The player runs, jumps, punches enemies, breaks Celtic blocks, collects sesterces, and searches for the stage exit. Score, time, hearts, lives, and continues all matter, with extra lives from laurels or 100 sesterces and extra continues from high score milestones.
Controls And Mechanics
- Movement: Asterix walks, sprints, ducks, swims, guides jumps, rides wagons, and can scroll the view to check for traps.
- Combat: punching is the main attack, while Dogmatix and Cacofonix bonuses can help against enemies.
- Items: cauldrons grant flight or temporary invincibility, boar restores health, and hidden blocks contain bonuses.
- Difficulty: easy, medium, and difficult settings change enemy pressure.
- Multiplayer: the PAL SNES release supports simultaneous two-player play.
Version Notes
This was a European PAL SNES release. A North American version was planned under the title Asterix the Gaul but was canceled, and there was no Super Famicom release in Japan.
