Overview and Gameplay

Kaneda searches Neo-Tokyo for Tetsuo in this menu-driven adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 animated film. Illustrated scenes, dialogue, and contextual commands carry the story forward, with players choosing actions such as talking, examining locations, and moving between scenes.

Progress depends on discovering the required sequence of commands. Poor choices can lead to arrest, death, or other abrupt endings, while occasional shooting and vehicle sequences interrupt the largely text-based adventure. Passwords allow progress to continue without battery-backed saving.

Controls And Mechanics

  • The directional pad moves cursors and scrolls command lists.
  • A advances text, confirms selections, and fires during action scenes.
  • B cancels commands and performs evasive actions in shooting sequences.
  • Select chooses a title-screen option and turns Kaneda around in one 360-degree encounter.
  • This is a single-player game with no multiplayer mode.

Version Notes

This Japanese Famicom release is entirely in Japanese and was never officially published for the Western NES. An unofficial English fan translation appeared years later, but it is separate from the original cartridge version.
