Overview and Gameplay

Batman crosses Gotham City to stop the Joker in this side-scrolling action platformer based loosely on the 1989 film. The campaign contains five linear stages, including Gotham’s streets, the Axis Chemical Factory, underground conduits, laboratory ruins, and Gotham Cathedral.

Combat combines rapid punches with three limited-ammunition weapons: the returning Batarang, the direct-firing Spear Gun, and the three-way Dirk. Precise jumping and a distinctive wall-jump become increasingly important as Batman climbs shafts, avoids hazards, defeats bosses, and advances toward the Joker.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Movement: Walk, crouch, and position Batman with the directional pad.
  • Jumping: Tap for a normal jump or hold for greater height. Press jump again while touching a wall to rebound away from it.
  • Combat: Punch or fire the selected weapon. Special weapons consume shared ammunition pellets.
  • Items: Hearts restore health, pellets replenish ammunition, and bonus emblems add points.
  • Player mode: Single-player only.

Version Notes

The Japanese release is titled Batman. The Western versions exchange the music assignments used in the first two stages compared with the Japanese Famicom release.
