Overview and Gameplay
Sam sets out to rescue his missing sheriff father and break the Scorpion gang’s hold over Villatown. Cowboy Kid mixes belt-scrolling combat with town exploration, shops, conversations, platforming sections, horseback action, and minigames.
Players pursue six wanted criminals before confronting the Scorpion Master. Missions can be selected, while acquired weapons and health upgrades improve Sam’s chances against tougher targets.
Controls And Mechanics
- Use the directional pad to move through towns and menus.
- Press A to jump and confirm dialogue choices.
- Press B to stab or fire the equipped weapon.
- Press Select to cycle through weapons, including the knife, gun, axes, and boomerangs.
- Collect gold for shops and hotels, keys for locked areas, food for health, and stars to increase maximum health.
- Two players can fight together simultaneously as Sam and Little Chief.
Version Notes
This English North American release was adapted from the Japanese Famicom game Western Kids. It features Romstar branding, localized dialogue, Western slang, and renamed characters, including Coyote Jim.
