Overview and Gameplay

Red-haired rival Dan kidnaps Kanna and draws carpenter Gen-san into Dr. Parallel’s latest scheme. Armed with a large wooden hammer, Gen-san crosses eight stages filled with construction sites, factories, moving machinery, underwater hazards, bosses, and a rapidly scrolling control tower.

The main action combines side-scrolling platforming with close-range combat. Crates contain useful upgrades, while bonus games after selected stages award additional items. Stages 6 and 7 introduce shooting sequences aboard a flying hammer machine. Completing the first eight-stage loop begins a harder second loop with a fuller ending.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Movement: Use the directional pad to run, crouch, and control the flying hammer.
  • Hammer: B performs a standard swing. Up with B produces an overhead strike, while crouching with B pounds the ground.
  • Jump and shooting: A jumps during platforming and fires collected weapons during flying sections.
  • Items: Select activates a stored item, including health recovery, enemy-clearing protection, or temporary slowdown effects.
  • Power-ups: Upgrades can improve attack strength, jumping ability, defense, or unlock a spinning hammer technique.

Version Notes

This Japanese Famicom release was never officially localized for western NES systems. Its story scenes contain Japanese text. “Hammerin’ Harry 2” is an unofficial English nickname rather than a released regional title.
