Overview and Gameplay
Stanley the Bugman faces Donkey Kong inside a greenhouse, using insect spray to push him up the vines while bees and other pests attack five flowers below. This NES conversion of Nintendo’s 1983 arcade game replaces the platform-heavy action of earlier Donkey Kong titles with fixed-screen shooting and score chasing.
Each round balances several threats: spray Donkey Kong, stop insects from stealing flowers, dodge coconuts and projectiles, and finish before time expires. Three greenhouse screens repeat with faster and more aggressive hazards.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move left or right with the directional pad, press up to reach higher platforms, and press down to drop lower.
- Either A or B fires Stanley’s sprayer.
- Force Donkey Kong above the hanging Super Sprayer to collect a temporary, more powerful spray.
- Preserved flowers and remaining time increase the round score. Keeping all five flowers awards a 3,000-point bonus.
- Two-player games use alternating turns rather than simultaneous play.
Version Notes
The NES conversion retains the arcade game’s three-screen structure but simplifies its audiovisual presentation and removes several arcade animations. Known Japanese, US, and UK cartridges contain the same game data, so the USA edition has no significant gameplay or language changes.
