Overview and Gameplay

Thomas must fight through five guarded floors of a castle to rescue Sylvia from Mr. X. This NES adaptation of Irem’s arcade game combines side-scrolling action with close-range martial arts combat, sending grippers, knife throwers, small fighters, animals, and environmental hazards from both directions.

Each floor has a time limit, an energy meter, and a distinct boss. Floors alternate direction, and defeating Mr. X completes the round before the challenge begins again. Game A provides the standard difficulty, while Game B increases the pressure with tougher enemy behavior. Remaining time and energy contribute to the score.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Walk, crouch, jump, or perform diagonal jumps.
  • A: Punch while standing, crouching, or jumping.
  • B: Kick while standing, crouching, or jumping.
  • Attack height and range matter against projectiles, short enemies, and bosses with specific defensive patterns.
  • The two-player modes are alternating. Each player takes a separate turn rather than fighting simultaneously.

Version Notes

The North American NES release is titled Kung Fu. The Japanese Famicom version uses the title Spartan X, reflecting the original Japanese arcade and film branding.
