Overview and Gameplay

Akakage enters a Sengoku-era conflict against the Kinmekyo cult, gathering three scroll sections to reveal the route to Genma Castle. This Japanese Famicom action platformer combines side-scrolling combat with hidden rooms, boss battles, and a less linear second chapter built around crossroads and revisiting locations.

The campaign has three stories. The first follows a fixed sequence toward the Kinme Statue, the second expands into route-based exploration, and the final story becomes a hazardous castle assault with moving platforms, lava, traps, and major enemies.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Movement: Run, crouch, enter marked buildings, and move in four directions inside certain rooms.
  • Combat: Jump and attack with a sword, shuriken, bombs, ground mines, or a returning boomerang weapon.
  • Ninjutsu: Limited-use techniques provide temporary invulnerability, crowd attacks, and duplicate images.
  • Companions: Items temporarily transform Akakage into faster Aokage or tougher Shirokage. Both remain single-player forms.

Version Notes

This is the Japan-only Famicom release titled Kamen no Ninja: Akakage. It received no official overseas NES edition.
